Summary

The authors, a Salvadoran legal collaborator and a Panamanian judge, start from the rise in violence against women during the covid-19 lockdown and argue that harsh criminal laws, including the offence of femicide, are not enough on their own. They review how femicide proceedings are handled in El Salvador and Panama and propose incorporating restorative justice practices to seek the truth, repair the harm, prevent repetition and also attend to indirect victims and to those who suffer through the judicial system. It is useful for judicial staff and for those designing support protocols.
