Summary
A chapter by Louk Hulsman on penal abolitionism. It argues that the acts grouped together as crimes do not form a category with a reality of its own: they have very different motives, consequences, and ways of being addressed, and the only thing they share is that the criminal justice system may intervene. It observes that many serious conflicts are resolved in the social environment, such as the family, the union, or the neighborhood, and therefore questions speaking of alternative responses to crime. It is useful for those studying the critique of the criminal justice system.
