Summary

An article based on in-depth interviews with eleven participants in two restorative dialogue groups on serious road traffic collisions, organized in Flanders between 2019 and 2021 by Moderator, the Flemish victim-offender mediation service. In these groups, victims, people who caused other collisions, and citizens talk together with mediators, although their cases are unrelated. The analysis identifies three themes: the importance of sharing similar stories, the blurred boundaries between roles, and the possibilities of and obstacles to repair. It concludes that shared stories and a safe, respectful atmosphere make mutual understanding possible.
