Summary

A legal anthropology thesis on the justice of the peace courts of Cangallo, in Ayacucho, based on case analysis. It shows that justice of the peace there is structured as a process of intermediation, driven by a constant search for consensus between the parties, in which the justice of the peace plays an accompanying role. It analyses how the law is understood and how custom is used, and concludes that each locality shapes this justice according to its needs, with conciliation as a constant. It is useful for those studying community mediation and justice of the peace in Peru.
