Summary

An opinion article by Diana Márquez, written from her experience as a mediator, facilitator of restorative dialogues, and worker in prison settings. It argues that prison reflects society's inequalities and logic of exclusion: most of those who end up incarcerated bring prior histories of poverty, violence, and institutional abandonment, and penal selectivity decides who gets there. It asks with what ethics those who work in the justice system intervene, and presents the practices of Víctimas por la Paz and the Cooperativa Liberté, such as dialogues between victims and offenders and the reparative aid fund.
