Summary
It presents restorative justice as an alternative to, or complement of, the retributive model, which is centred on punishment. It argues that an offence is not only the breach of a rule but also harm to bonds and relationships, and that reparation must therefore cover both the material and the symbolic. It reviews mediation, conferences and peace circles, and argues that they can improve the accountability of the person who caused harm and the care of victims, although their implementation and evaluation remain complex. It is useful for those new to the subject from psychology or law.
