Summary

A lecture by Nils Christie in which he argues that conflicts belong to the people involved and that criminology and the professions of the criminal justice system have been taking them away. It contrasts a community trial in Tanzania with the procedure of the courts and proposes a model in which the victim and the offender are at the center, with lawyers and experts as support rather than owners of the case. It is useful for those studying the place of the victim and the foundations of restorative justice.
