Summary

A Master's thesis examining marae-based youth courts (Rangatahi Courts) from the perspective of young Māori, lay advocates, and kaumātua. Using kaupapa Māori methodology, through individual interviews and focus groups with eleven participants, it explores how young people experienced their passage through the criminal justice system and how cultural values can improve that journey. It identifies four themes: the law as it affects rangatahi, whakamā, the spiritual dimension of the marae, and the potential of the lay advocate role. Useful for those working in youth justice with Indigenous young people.
