Summary
New Zealand's law on the well-being of children and young people, enacted in 1989 as the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act and later renamed. It governs care and protection and youth justice, and created family group conferences, in which the family, whānau, the victim, and agencies agree on a plan for the young person. Part 4 sets out the principles of youth justice—avoiding criminal proceedings where possible, strengthening the family, and taking account of the victim's interests—and the types of conferences and their timeframes. Useful for studying the legal model that gave rise to this practice.
